Airfares on flights to Cancun from a selection of Midwestern airports have been slashed by two of the main carriers on the route, US Airways-American and United. Both airlines are offering steep discounts of up to 35% on flights originating in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Omaha and Salt Lake City.

United initiated the sale on the evening of August 6, while US Airways-American lowered their prices to match the following day. Most of the sale flights involve connections, with total travel times varying between six and 12 hours. United offers nonstop flights from Cleveland, halving traveling time to just 3 hours 40 minutes, although discounts on these flights are among the smallest, at just under 5%.

Cut-price seats are available on departures between September and February. This is good news for budget travelers, who will be able to pick up low-season Cancun resort deals through the first few months of the sale. However, this also corresponds to Cancun’s hurricane season, which runs from June to November.

Usually, disturbance is minimal, but flight cancellations are a real possibility, and buying appropriate travel insurance is essential if you plan to travel between September and November.

Data analysts at Hopper said they did not expect the sale to last long.

"Travelers should book soon," said Hopper’s chief data analyst Patrick Surry. "We don't expect the sale to last longer than one week, as these types of flash fare sales are typically over very quickly."
